Description

Preparing to depart from Totnes with a train to Buckfastleigh is sole surviving Great Western Railway 1366 Class 0-6-0PT engine number 1369.

A very rare locomotive, only 6 members of the 1366 Class 0-6-0PT shunting engines were built in February 1934, their main purpose being to work in dockyards and on branchlines with sharp corners.

1369 was pressed into service as the Swindon Works shunter until 1960 when it was moved to Weymouth to operate the famous Quay branch, notable for being one of only a few street-running railways in the UK, negotiating the tight streets of Weymouth's town centre to reach the dockyard. In 1962 the locomotive was moved yet again, this time to the Bodmin and Wenford branch, working until it was replaced in 1964 by a new diesel equivalent, but in doing so became the the last steam locomotive working for British Rail in Cornwall.

Upon retirement it was sent to Buckfastleigh on 2nd April 1966, and following an extensive restoration, 1369 returned to service in 1996, sporting BR unlined black livery. It was withdrawn from service in 2005 and a further overhaul was completed in 2007, leaving it in it's current GWR green.
