Bentley 4.5 Litre

Description

Just some shots from a visit to the Lakeland Motor Museum in the Lake District earlier this year.

A classic Bentley if ever there was one, the 4½ Litre was an experimental design based on the Rolls-Royce Peregrine project, which entailed the inclusion of a supercharged 2¾ L engine. The 4½ Litre was finally fitted with a less adventurous engine developed from the straight-6 of a Rolls-Royce 20/25. Bentley's variant featured a higher compression ratio, a sportier camshaft profile and two SU carburetors on a crossflow cylinder head. These combined features produced a 110 bhp engine, capable of reaching 90mph.

In total, 2400 4½ Litres were produced between 1933 and 1939, with the chassis being completed at their Derby works whilst the bodies themselves were handcrafted by Park Ward coachbuilders of London. One of the most prominent owners of a Bentley 4½ Litre was the late Donald Campbell, who had his car painted blue to match that of his record setting boat Bluebird, in which he tragically lost his life whilst trying to set his 8th speed record on Coniston Water in Lancashire. One of the 4½ Litres' also featured in the James Bond film From Russia With Love.

Today, these cars have become popular collectors items, usually to be found at various Vintage Car Rallies across the world.
